Differences Between a Short Story, Novelette, Novella, & a Novel

When I first started writing professionally, there were a lot of basic questions in my mind, one of which was, What are the major differences between a short story, novelette, novella, and a novel? Novellas and novelettes might not be very common, but we often see short stories and novels. Knowing the differences, however, is still important. Although they are all works of fiction, each type has its own purpose. In this article, I will try to put light on some of the major differences between flash fiction, short story, novelette, novella, and a novel. Beginners will find this very helpful in their writing journey. Apart from some of the basic differences in terms of word count, you will also learn a few technical points that differentiate these works of fiction.

Many writers start with short stories before they move onto novel writing. Short stories are great to start with because they take less time to write and usually require a less complicated structure, letting you develop your storytelling skills in a more manageable way. Difference 2: Plots and subplots

Novel vs Short Story

A short story is not a compressed novel. Novels can involve multiple plots subplots , multiple perspectives, and more than one theme that resonates throughout the text. Short stories, obviously, are shorter. They typically run anywhere from one thousand to 7, words. Novels, of course, are tens of thousands of words long. The reason I mention this is because length means something.

Short story and novel are both narrative fiction written in prose. The main difference between short story and novel is their length; a short story is generally shorter than a novel as it is intended to be read in a single setting. Short stories generally range anywhere from 1, to 30, words whereas novels start from about 50, words. This word counts are only mentioned to give you a general idea about the length; there is no strict rule saying that these two categories should stay within these boundaries. Due to this difference in length, some other significant differences arise between short stories and novels. Short stories have no set length, but most publisher guidelines indicate the word range to be anywhere from 1, to 30, words. The most notable characteristic of short stories is that they are meant to be read in a single sitting and designed to produce a single effect.

Writers Write is your one-stop writing resource. In this post, we write about the difference between a novel and a short story. One of my favourite writers, David Leavitt made his career with the short story before breaking into novels. Rather than length as a dividing line, short stories—the good ones anyway—have a stronger sense of unity than a novel. One could take the idea of a single event and say it should reflect in a crucial moment of change for the character or, at the very least, reflect a new awareness or attitude for the character. It can be subtle or dramatic—but there must be an arc.
