Children’s Book List: Picture Books about the Moon

Moonshot shares a very personal side of the lunar landings; the story of adventure and overcoming all odds. The poetic rhymes, large size and beautiful double-page illustrations make this the perfect book for reading out loud to a group of children. Gibbons has written and illustrated more than 50 books and was the winner of the Regina Award. This is a good choice for somewhat older children, as it goes into more detail explaining tides, why the same side of the Moon always faces the Earth, both solar and lunar eclipses, and the phases of the Moon.
These picture books about the moon are some of my favorites for children. This book list contains both fiction and nonfiction and is a perfect addition to any lesson on astronomy for kids! The kids and I have been learning all about the moon over the last few weeks check out our free moon observation journal sheet , so I decided to put together a collection of moon-themed books for them to explore. This particular book set includes both fiction and nonfiction. Not only can kids learn actual facts about the moon, but the fiction books help kids use those facts to stretch their imaginations! I love putting together book sets related to a particular theme and setting them apart from our other books, so the kids can easily read them whenever the mood strikes.
Sharing is caring - thank you for spreading the word! Kids are also fascinated by the changing shapes of the moon over the course of every 28 days. Below I have reviewed 16 books about the moon for kids.
