My mind immediately flashed back to my high school English class. I loved that class, and it even played a role in my decision to be an English major in college. It's probably because I had an amazing teacher, who helped me learn to appreciate writing, literature, and symbolism. She also introduced me to another great educator: John Keating. Why do we read and write poetry?

To assume poetry is the reason to live, the thing to live for, is a powerful statement. Regardless of the pursuits of the individual, the goals and dreams that that we think will sustain us, poetry still remains the life blood of the human race. According to Robin Williams character, all other things are used solely to keep us alive in order to sustain our necessity to consume poetry. This is particularly powerful because it resonates, because he's right. However, in my opinion poetry can be many things.
