Originally planned as a six-book series, it now consists of fourteen published novels. The series also includes a stand-alone prequel novel and a companion book. The author began writing the first volume, The Eye of the World , in and it was published in The eleventh volume was published in The author passed away in September while working on the final volume, A Memory of Light. Fellow fantasy writer Brandon Sanderson was to complete the final volume for publication in late , however due to the size it was decided that Jordan's A Memory of Light would be divided into three separate novels.
One of the most popular fantasy franchises of the literary world, The Wheel of Time , is getting a live-action television adaptation. Originally authored by Robert Jordan, the 80 million-selling book series depicts a sprawling mythology, amalgamating feudal and magical tropes with elements of Eastern mysticism. Indeed, the books bear philosophical influences from European and Asian culture, notably Buddhism and Hinduism, centered on the idea of time being cyclical in nature. Amazon gave a series order to The Wheel of Time back in October , setting the project as an hour-long series that will stream on Amazon Prime Video, as reported by Deadline and confirmed by an APV retweet. The move was the culmination of what had been a year-and-a-half process, going back to April , when it was first reported that Sony Pictures Television was moving forward with the TV project. The Wheel of Time TV series is moving along swiftly, with production having started on September 16, a bittersweet date, since it also marked the year anniversary of author Robert Jordan's passing.

Originally expected to have been published around March , the book was delayed several times, and the hardcover edition was eventually released on January 8, The title A Memory of Light was previously intended to apply to a book containing the material in what are now books 12, 13 and Tor Books announced that Brandon Sanderson had been chosen to finish writing the book. The unfinished book was split into three volumes because it was believed a single volume would be too large to print. In the prologue, the armies of the Westlands assemble in preparation for Tarmon Gai'don , as do the forces of the Shadow.
Amazon Studios has confirmed it's producing a one-hour adaptation of The Wheel of Time, which appears to be a pilot for the series. Amazon Prime subscribers are likely to be able to watch the show for free on the platform. The Wheel of Time series is said to have been in the works for about a year at Amazon Studios before the announcement. The show has been given the green light with Agents of S. D and Chuck writer Rafe Judkins adapting the hefty novels.
