Thirteen Reasons Why Themes

In the box? Thirteen tapes and a map left behind by his classmate, best friend and secret crush, Hannah, who died by suicide two weeks earlier. Each tape is dedicated to one person who somehow led the teenager to kill herself. To me, there are 13 reasons why this new show is an important watch. It has a strong message against cyberbullying, as it shows the repercussions of social media and the misuse of technology. It highlights feelings of hopelessness and describes how depression engulfs someone in an endless and inescapable whirlwind of real life nightmares.

Perhaps the most prevalent theme in Thirteen Reasons Why is the theme of repercussions, or cause and effect. Another example is Jenny driving drunk and knocking over the stop sign. And yet, these incongruous actions had devastating results. These repercussions are why Hannah tells her peers again and again that they must be vigilant and thoughtful with their actions. To Hannah, the gossip and rumors circulated about her, oftentimes by the people she trusted and considered friends, is another form of betrayal. Time and time again she opened up to people, sharing with them her secrets, her inner thoughts, and her emotions, and they just became fodder for the school. Hannah placed so much significance and importance in this kiss.
