A Book of Middle English by J.A. BurrowThis revised edition takes account of suggestions and comments from reviewers and from those who have used the first edition all over the world. The main features of the second edition are the inclusion of etymologies in the glossary and the edition of three complete texts by Chaucer: The Parliament of Fowls, The Reeves Tale and The Prioresss Tale. Part One has been revised to cover English at the time of Chaucer, and suggestions for further reading have been updated throughout the book.

A Book of Middle English, 3rd Edition
Here as elsewhere in this volume, medieval literature is seen not as marginal to but as epitomizing current literary-theoretical concerns. The former, at least, are an important contribution to the field of medieval studies and should be of considerable interest to all medievalists. A Book ofMiddle English. Oxford and Cambridge, Mass. Given the distinguished scholarly stature of the compilers, John Burrow and Thorlac Turville-Petre's anthology of Middle English texts and extracts deserves careful consideration by teachers of Middle English language and literature. The book consists oftwo major parts, each distinctive in its own way. Possibly the compilers assume too great a familiarity with Old English especially among students in the UnitedStates , but the account is generally clear, and any opaque spots could be explained by a philologically competent teacher- an increasingly rara avis, however.
