THE SETTING IN THE GIVER

The time is the future. There are family groups, each with a boy and a girl. The adults work. The children go to school. But, people have made changes in how society operates since our time. As we first encounter the characters in the story, we think that they live in a utopia. There is a sense that their way of living is better than that of communities that are far from them historically or geographically.

In the beginning of The Giver the author is trying to convey that the atmosphere in the community is colorless, and their society revolves around sameness. In a sense the society is basically treated like robots. For example, the society must take their morning medication every day to make them feel a certain way, such as happy. They have no true feeling or emotion the emotion they carry with them come from a pill. As for the book setting in The Giver, published by Houghton Mifflin, author Lois Lowry stated that the setting in The Giver is an unspecific time in the future.
