Beaucoup Arlo & Janis by Jimmy Johnson

A big coffee-table book compilation of daily Arlo & Janis strips.

I remember coming across Arlo and Janis in the newspaper as a high schooler and being shocked at suddenly getting one of the jokes - and boy was it dirty! Before that I had relegated this comic to the boring adult category like Apartment 3G. It was just nonsensical to a kid like me. Where was the punchline?

Yeah, the punch line is sometimes subtle, but often requires an understanding of adult sexual relationships.

The more of the comic I read, the more hope I had for a happy, healthy, sexy marriage some day. I wanted to have the kind of playful relationship that was represented in those comics.

Adding to this hidden sexiness is Johnsons amazing sense of timing. The punchline, the climax, of a strip often happens between panels. You dont see the prat-fall with a big-font SPLAT, instead you see the disheveled character afterwards. You dont see a neighbors eyes bugging-out when they can see what our heroes are up to on their back deck - instead we get a big of a leer and musical good morning on the next days walk. It is all subtle, but all the more effective for it.
