Much Ado About Nothing Review
Much Ado About Nothing is a comedy by William Shakespeare thought to have been written in and , as Shakespeare was approaching the middle of his career. The play was included in the First Folio , published in By means of "noting" which, in Shakespeare's day, sounded similar to "nothing" as in the play's title, and which means gossip, rumour, and overhearing , Benedick and Beatrice are tricked into confessing their love for each other, and Claudio is tricked into rejecting Hero at the altar on the erroneous belief that she has been unfaithful. At the end, Benedick and Beatrice join forces to set things right, and the others join in a dance celebrating the marriages of the two couples. In Messina , a messenger brings news that Don Pedro, a prince from Aragon , will return that night from a successful battle, Claudio being among his soldiers. Beatrice, niece of Leonato, a governor of Messina, asks the messenger about Benedick, Don Pedro's companion, and makes sarcastic remarks about his ineptitude as a soldier. The entire movie is bathed — no, drenched — in sunlight. A delectable golden glow practically radiates from the screen, and the actors appear to have spent their free time under that very same sun: This may be the first Shakespeare movie in which the characters sport tans worthy of an MTV spring-break marathon. Clearly, Branagh has slathered a hefty gob of contemporary frosting onto this 16th-century cake, enough to keep art houses and maybe even malls packed for several months. The movie opens with a burst of joy, as Don Pedro Washington and his men return from the wars, the soundtrack flooded with an ecstatic fanfare, the screen filled with images of men and women smiling, bathing, primping. This, the movie says, is what nature intended: courtship as a childlike effusion.
Storyline: Young lovers Hero and Claudio are to be married in one week. Meanwhile, the evil Don Jon conspires to break up the wedding by accusing Hero of infidelity. In college I was an English literature major, with a minor in theater, and so Shakespeare is found in both. Theater people state that Shakespeare was never literature at all, which in the purpose of the plays is true, however because of the prose that he wrote in is a poetic form, he is literature as well. Whatever you do, never get in between two people arguing this point, your head might blow up!
