The Interlopers (theme)

What Is the Narrative Hook for "The Interlopers?"

The men are sworn enemies, embroiled in a generations-old land dispute. On this particular night, each hopes to find the other in order to kill him in defense of their property rights. Both men separate from their hunting party and happen upon one another in the forest. Before either can attack, the branch of a beech tree collapses on the two men and traps them both. The men initially quarrel but soon realize the futility of their vengeance and reconcile.

Ulrich von Gradwitz is a wealthy landowner. He has legal right to a disputed stretch of land but knows that Georg continues to hunt on this land. On the night the story takes place, he has organized a group of men to find Georg, whom he plans to kill. He considers Georg his enemy and calls him a "forest-thief, game-snatcher. Ulrich is also the one who sees wolves approaching. Georg Znaeym comes from a line of small landowners who have refused to accept the judgement of the courts regarding a disputed piece of land.

The setting of a short story is not simply the time and place; setting can also include lighting, social conditions and weather. Careful description of these aspects helps the reader gain a greater sense of the story and can connect to the story's central theme and greatly enhance the author's purpose. Saki's use of setting provides "The Interlopers" with its mood, situational irony and ironic climax. Setting is arguably the most effective element in "The Interlopers. The physical setting of "The Interlopers" is the eastern edge of the Carpathian Mountains, which range from the Czech Republic in the northeast to Romania in the south.

In the story The Interlopers, the main theme would be the enmity between Ulrich and Georg, which causes the two men to feud over the small stretch of forest.

In The Interlopers by Saki we have the theme of conflict, bitterness, anger, reconciliation, mortality, connection, change and forgiveness. Taken from his The Complete Short Stories collection the story is narrated in the third person by an unnamed narrator and after reading the story the reader realises that Saki may be exploring the theme of conflict. Both Ulrich and Georg believe that they are the rightful owners of the forest. If anything there is a large amount of bitterness between both men something that is noticeable when both Ulrich and Georg are pinned to the ground by the branches. It is the thing that drives them particularly for Ulrich. It is also interesting that Ulrich from the beginning of the story is willing to kill Georg as this may highlight further just how deeply felt the conflict is. With neither man being able to let go of their desire to see the end of the other.
