11 Very Short Stories You Must Read Immediately
To the best of my knowledge no list, book, film or otherwise exists like this one. In doing a first list you really hope to do it best, but with a stories on the list, it will make doing it well very difficult, so, as with our list of poems, we need your help. Please make suggestions in the comments section. Why do a list like this? It helps people find great short stories they want to read.
Howard is an avid short story reader who likes to help others find and understand stories. If your students are struggling to get into the short story, or you're pressed for time, here are some very brief stories to get you started. They're not as short as Hemingway's famous six-word story For sale: baby shoes, never worn. Most are under 2, words; I've included an approximate word count where I could. If you want to be able to reference a print edition at your leisure, one of my favorites is "Little Worlds" Amazon. This anthology has 31 short stories for students. Their lengths vary.
3. ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’
For years, the longreads hashtag on Twitter has been filled with great story recommendations from people around the world. I end up reading almost every day, irrespective of whether I am able to write something or not. Here are ten that I enjoyed the most, in random order:. Alice Munro is one of my favourites, and I loved this one about a grieving woman who goes to an institution to meet her husband. Doree had to take three buses—one to Kincardine, where she waited for one to London, where she waited again, for the city bus out to the facility.
Quick and easily shared, is the short story the form for our times? Leading authors pick their favourites. Sat 2 Feb Mostly dialogue, it is a deft, witty tale in which a small kindness — though not by a diplomatic wife — pays off 40 years later. I must have read it a dozen times, to see how its note is sustained and the surprise is sprung; every time it makes me smile with delight.
