William Herschel Quotes (Author of The Scientific Papers of Sir William Herschel)
NOVA Short - Founders of Modern Astronomy - PBS
In , the German-English astronomer William Herschel sent shockwaves through the world of science when he discovered the planet Uranus. Since humans began observing the stars, the general consensus was that there were only five other planets in addition to the earth orbiting our sun. That there could be sixth planet in the heavens was almost unthinkable.
William Herschel , in full Sir William Frederick Herschel , original name Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel , born November 15, , Hannover, Hanover—died August 25, , Slough , Buckinghamshire , England , German-born British astronomer, the founder of sidereal astronomy for the systematic observation of the heavens. He discovered the planet Uranus , hypothesized that nebulae are composed of stars , and developed a theory of stellar evolution. He was knighted in Following the same profession, the boy played in the band of the Hanoverian Guards. After the French occupation of Hanover in , he escaped to England , where at first he earned a living by copying music. But he steadily improved his position by becoming a music teacher, performer, and composer, until in he was appointed organist of a fashionable chapel in Bath , the well-known spa. Combining obstinacy with boundless energy, William was not content to observe the nearby Sun , Moon , and planets , as did nearly all astronomers of his day, but was determined to study the distant celestial bodies as well, and he realized he would need telescopes with large mirrors to collect enough light—larger, in fact, than opticians could supply at reasonable cost.
William Herschel was one of the great astronomers of the 18th century. He was one of 10 children, of whom 6 survived. His father was a musician and Herschel followed in his footsteps. When he was 14 he became a musician in a military band. However, in William Herschel moved to England. At first, Herschel lived in London but later he lived in the north of England.

Friedrich Wilhelm (William) Herschel (November 15, 1738 - August 25, 1822)
Scouring the heavens with his sister, Caroline, Sir William Herschel discovered the planet Uranus and several moons around other gas giants. In the course of his studies of the night sky, he also compiled a catalog of 2, celestial objects that is still in use today. - Born in the Electorate of Hanover , Herschel followed his father into the Military Band of Hanover, before migrating to Great Britain in at the age of nineteen.
William Herschel began life as a musician, like his father and brothers. He made a living as a music teacher, composer and organist, and began studying the importance of math in music. Herschel began his career by borrowing a telescope. Dissatisfied with its poor quality, he began making his own, devoting all his spare time outside his musical career to perfecting his designs. His sister, Caroline, joined him in his home to help with housekeeping and home affairs, and would eventually accompany him in his work, becoming a famous astronomer in her own right. The two would work together: William would sit at the telescope making observations, and call his results to Caroline, who would record them. Caroline would eventually become an observer as well.
