Grandfather Mountain: A Profile by Miles Tager

Many have seen it, but few people know it well. Now come visit the Grandfather Mountain in its complete history, and full stature as one of the worlds great mountains. Grandfather Mountain: A Profile travels back to the origins of this living entity, then traces its unique development--geological, natural, prehistoric, and modern humans-- to the present day, where it still stands alone as the grand patriarch of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Hiking to the top of Grandfather Mountain, NC

Profile Trail

By Trail Contributor: Zach Robbins. Grandfather Mountain is one of the most beautiful, rugged landscapes in North Carolina but hiking it for free is an all-day affair filled with grand views, steep climbs, and some physical hardships. Otherwise the bold hikers can hike the mountain via the Profile Trail below or the previously described Daniel Boone Scout Trail. Although shorter, the Profile Trail is arguably the toughest ascent due to the steep inclines and long stretches of boulder-strewn paths. You can cut 1. Just make sure to hike as far as Attic Window Peak and MacRae Peak, which offer some of the best views and exciting rock scrambles in the region.

RATED: 4. But one of our favorite hikes at Grandfather Mountain summits the mountain via a fee-free access trail, the Profile Trail. The trail summits Calloway Peak, the highest mountain on the Grandfather ridge. The views are outstanding. The forest is scenic. And the trail is exceptionally well-designed and built, making for a fun, though challenging, hike.

Ascending about feet over miles, this trail begins at the Profile Trail parking area at NC Hwy Profile Trail at Grandfather Mountain State Park.
