40 Healthy Coping Skills for Dealing With Uncomfortable Emotions

Coping skills help you tolerate, minimize, and deal with stressful situations in life. Managing your stress well can help you feel better physically and psychologically and it can impact your ability to perform your best. But not all coping skills are created equal. Problem-based coping is helpful when you need to change your situation, perhaps by removing a stressful thing from your life. You open your email to find your annual performance review. You feel anxious and frustrated. You were so flattered and surprised by the invitation that you agreed to do it.

What Do You Do When You Feel Stressed Or Anxious?

I know something is off when instead of reading and winding down before bed, I have the desire to stay up on my phone and watch YouTube videos or veg out. My self-care is lacking and I just want to engage in a mindless task.

We will all encounter stressful situations at some point in our lives, whether it be related to work, school, or our personal relationships — any therapist will tell you that. That being said, we all cope with stress differently, and the ways in which we learn to deal with these stressful situations can be the key to whether or not we remain stressed or can move beyond whatever our circumstances are and find peace. In essence, coping describes how we consciously deal with stress. In other words, it refers to the strategies we employ to deal with whatever is causing us stress or discomfort: do we face the problem head on? Do we brush it away and hope it disappears?

Coping mechanisms are helpful activities that we can use to help us work through hard times. Having coping skills is important when you have mental health disorders because it helps you step away from detrimental symptoms. Having healthy coping skills is important for building resilience, gaining control and processing specific situations. Coping mechanisms can be classified into healthy or unhealthy. An unhealthy coping mechanism is an activity that becomes a crutch or a necessity to complete to feel better. In other words, the person feels that they are unable to work through difficult moments if they do not have the unhealthy way of coping.

Coping strategies are the actions we take to deal with stress, problems, or uncomfortable emotions. Unhealthy coping strategies often provide instant gratification or relief, but have long-term negative consequences. The Healthy vs. Unhealthy Coping Strategies worksheet was designed to teach your clients about the importance of using healthy coping strategies, and then guide them toward applying this knowledge in their own lives. The first page of this worksheet focuses on psychoeducation, using examples and real-life scenarios.
